The abrasive wheels training course from H&W Training is suitable for farmers, managers, fitters, foremen and other workers that use bench mounted abrasive wheels or petrol powered saws.

- Understand the nature of the hazards and identify the causes
- Identify and understand requirements and responsibilities under the current legislation
- Understand the characteristics of abrasives and their actions
- Understand and interpret the marking system of abrasive wheels
- Recognise the need for careful handling of abrasive wheels and carry out visual check and ring tests (for bench grinders)
- Understand and identify what speeds should be adhered to in wheel selection
- Identify main components and understand their functions
- Mount an abrasive wheel and /or a diamond blade
- Understand the difference between truing and dressing a wheel, undertake dressing a wheel and identify dressers (for bench grinders)
- Adjust work rests correctly (for bench grinders)
- Use operating precautions and be aware of avoiding hazardous conditions
- Demonstrate their knowledge on abrasive wheels and diamond blades
- Carry out daily maintenance on petrol powered machines

The duration of the course largely depends on the number of categories you wish to be trained in and your level of experience.
For example, a novice operator may require 3 days of training to cover all 3 categories, whereas an experienced operator without prior formal evidence may only require 2, possibly even 1 days training.

Funding options:
- Modern Apprenticeships (MA) – working for you from day one apprentices gain the skills you need to increase productivity. SDS will make a contribution to training costs and a learning provider can organise the training for you if required.
- Employer Recruitment Incentive (ERI) – employers get an incentive of up to £2,000 –depending on criteria – to take on a Modern Apprentice who has had a barrier to employment in the past or is unemployed.
- Flexible Training Opportunities (FTO) – businesses with existing staff of up to 150 employees can get up to 50% of training costs reimbursed up to a maximum of £5000 for 10 training episodes. FTOs aim to help smaller firms weather the recession.
- Low Carbon Skills Fund – Businesses who train their staff in carbon reduction and energy efficiency, can access up to £500 each towards a maximum of 25 training experiences
NPTC Assessment is available upon completion of these training courses.
